Giddes Chalamanda performs yet againSays he is still composing songs
Thursday, May 28 2026 will remain a special day in the memory of some music lovers who attended the Sounds of Malawi concert at Alliance Francaise De Blantyre, formerly Jacaranda Cultural Centre where legendary Giddes Chalamanda performed.
By 6pm, patrons had already started trekking to the venue, looking forward to a night of music and fun.

When Chalamanda walked in, he looked determined, frail, but enthusiastic.
“Things have not been easy but I am now glad to be back on stage,” he told The Nation before his performance.
Chalamanda said he has not stopped composing songs and looking forward to recording more.
When he jumped on stage, Chalamanda proved that at 95 he still have the energy to deliver. He handled and played his Banjo like the expert that he is.
He performed songs such as Ndamva Mbiri, Chemeri, Nthawi Zina, Liny Ho, Napolo, Mkazi ndi Mawaya and Buffalo Soldier.
As per the tradition of Sounds of Malawi, patrons had time to flock to the dance floor to dance to the music led by the concert’s host Waliko Makhala who later led a question and answer session.
Chalamanda told the packed venue that his favourite artist in Malawi is Chileka-based Anthony Makondetsa.
He also said patrons that in his early life, he wanted to be a boxer but failed to make it and later resorted to music.
“I am so glad that all of you showed up to support me during this concert. At 95, I am still happy to perform and make people happy,” said Chalamanda.
The artist disclosed that he composed his song Buffalo Soldier in 1974 and the song remains one of his favourite.
On his part, host Makhala said it was an honour to host Chalamanda at the Sounds of Malawi Acoustic stage.
“His versatility on playing the Banjo remains unique in the country. His songs have touched a lot of people as evident with the high patronage this evening. He is a true grandmaster of Malawian music,” he said.
